What is a chargeback?
In a card dispute, the cardholder challenges a payment through the issuer. A formal dispute can initiate a chargeback that reverses the payment through the card system. Not every dispute is an allegation of fraud.
A refund takes another route
A refund is initiated by the merchant through its payment provider. A chargeback follows the issuer and scheme dispute process. Treat the two as different workflows: a merchant should check the current dispute state before taking an action that could create duplicate reimbursement.
Evidence must answer the reason
A response about delivery may not answer an unauthorised-payment claim. Read the reason, deadline and eligible evidence in the provider’s process. A submission is not a guaranteed win. Time limits and stages depend on the scheme, provider and circumstances.
Learning goes beyond winning
Track what the outcome tells you about the underlying journey: confusing descriptors, fulfilment, cancellation, account security or payment misuse. Separate operational volumes from cohort-based analysis. Keep the customer’s claim and the eventual finding distinct.
