Theory Lesson 32
RISK / 5 MIN

The next person should not start again

Turn an alert into a useful, bounded operational handoff.

01

A handoff is a product

Escalation should reduce uncertainty for the next responsible person. Forwarding a screenshot with “urgent” creates work without explaining the decision needed. A useful handoff states the observed event, affected scope, evidence quality, actions already taken and the specific question that requires another team’s authority.

02

Facts before interpretation

Separate measured observations from hypotheses. “Twenty requests arrived in one minute” is different from “an attacker is testing cards”. The second may be plausible, but the receiving team needs the original facts and relevant context to evaluate it rather than inheriting an unsupported conclusion.

03

A bounded escalation

A fictional analyst sees a sudden change confined to one integration. The handoff names that integration, timestamps, sample references, known customer impact and the temporary control applied. It also states who approved the control and when it should be reviewed, preventing an emergency measure from becoming permanent by accident.

04

Close and learn

Assign ownership, an update time and an explicit closure condition. Preserve safe evidence and record why the eventual decision differed from the first hypothesis, if it did. NIST’s incident-response framework informs this operational discipline; the exercise does not turn every unusual transaction into a confirmed cybersecurity incident.
