A shared agreement
A payment scheme establishes common rules and practices for a defined payment arrangement. It helps participants interpret the same transaction consistently. Infrastructure supplies the mechanisms through which instructions are exchanged, cleared or settled. These layers cooperate, but naming one does not fully describe the other.
Why the distinction matters
When someone says “SEPA”, ask which payment instrument and flow they mean. A credit transfer, an instant credit transfer and a direct debit have different operational characteristics. A label covering a region or family of arrangements is not a complete specification for a product integration.
An integration conversation
A fictional merchant asks for “SEPA support” and assumes it includes pulling subscription payments from customer accounts. The developer implements outbound credit transfers. Both teams used the same broad label while describing different instructions, permissions and customer journeys, creating a mismatch before the first payment was processed.
Write a precise brief
Name the instrument, currency, direction, participant role, message flow and expected status lifecycle. Then identify the actual connectivity and settlement arrangement. This layered description makes documentation, testing and exception ownership more concrete than treating every European bank payment as one interchangeable rail with one universal experience.
